Sportswear Personified.

Alexander Wang showcased his Cruise 2012 collection yesterday and it was a rather urban affair.

Coming straight from his Accessories Designer of the Year awards at the CFDA's last week, Wang showcased his collection in New York.

Colour blocking, slick zip -front jackets, tracksuit slouch pants and swimwear were the key looks throughout.

It's no surprise that women across the globe are sporting swimwear pieces as undergarments and this was translated within his collection.

Though not incredibly inspirational, Wang's label is booming, due to his street savvy commercialism.

I personally love the layered colour blocked jackets. A sure fire hit on the high-street.

and.. and.. and.. Wang is opening his second flagship store in beijing. It's a good day.

This was it. When it all comes to an end.

It's really hit me this evening just how much I am going to miss being here in Birmingham and studying something I truly love, but what I do know is i'm equipped with exactly the right tools for me to thrive in this pretty cutthroat industry. (Round of applause for the staff)

That said, we all attended the BIAD private view show, where family and friends were allowed to view everyones hard work and celebrate the end of our university lives. The whole university were part of the evening, with students ranging through Fashion Design, Architecture, Costume Design and Photography.

What I can say is.. BIAD really did excel themselves in the standard of work showcased. I went around lots of different departments to get an insight into what other students were doing, and I was blown away by how much talent the uni has.

Alexander Mcqueen Copy Cat?! Almost identical.

Not to blow our own trumpets, but as far as i'm concerned the new FRM exhibition stands were by far the best space to showcases everyones projects. Very professional.

Also a big congratulations to everyone that won a FRM award!.. it's a shame that not everyones incredibly hardwork was recognised, it was a little deflating for most.. but then again i'm happy our Disneyland Paris Excursion was a highlight. I'll be remembered for something.. eh?

I can't speak on behalf of everyone but certainly from myself, there has been a noted change in the way the course has been run in the past year, and it's definatley not gone unnoticed. Great support from all tutors, so thankyou to all of you.

Ricardo Tisci's Fall Collection for Givenchy was another sure hit oozing wearability and sophistication.

The prints and colour ways are beautiful and the sportswear undertones seem apt for a resort collection.

Favourite piece: Definatley the 1950's navy, double-silk dress with swimwear style bodice. gorgeous.

I didn't think Topman, Oxford Circus could get any better. Until now.

Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge seems to be dressing rather well lately. I havn't decided if it's luck or if she actually shows true promise. But certainly as of late, Kate has excelled herself in the style stakes.

The ARK Gala dinner was no exception, where she chose a beautiful pearl Jenny Packham dress with Swarovski crystal detailing. Funny enough, this same dress was worn by none other than Blair Waldorf in an episode of Gossip Girl.

I hear you ask.. is the future queen of England a fan of GG? All I can say is for her sanity... I hope not.

Nevertheless, The Duchess Of Cambridge wears it perfectly, oozing sophistication in the simple,striking and clean cut gown.

I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

Emma Watson - US Vogue July 2011

Some people get all the luck, take Emma Watson, she's not only a critically acclaimed actress but a Burberry clotheshorse, the face of beauty gian Lancome, dedicated style icon and now, Miss Watson has bagged her first US Vogue cover.

All this at the age of 21 makes me feel like a chronic underachiever. That said, we can't begrudge Emma's success, and credit definatley where it is due.

As of late, US Vogue have left me feeling a little dissapointed with their choice of covers however, after several months, Anna Wintour finally hits the ground running.

The burgundy and orange work together perfectly, showcasing a summery and sophisticated vibe. The cover headlines, while still impacting, have been reduced in number and increased in size, which somehow works quite well... and is a damn sight better than previous issues.

The editorial inside follows the same line. Very intense colours and quite a lot of metallics.

and.. she's wearing the amazing Tom Ford chain mail top. mmm.

All The World's A Stage

I got all cultured this afternoon. Yes, you hear right. Cultured.

I went to a fantastic production of 'Hindle Wakes' at the Capitol Theatre in Manchester starring none other than my older, actor brother Ryan. Yes.. we are quite the 'arty farty' siblings.

I always try and see him in as much I possibly can, and often being at the opposite sides of the country it can be pretty difficult however, this time it was possible. This particular stage production was directed by Joyce Branagh, the sister of hollywood actor and director Kenneth Branagh and is set in Lancashire in the 1900's.

The story is set in and around the town of Hindle when the cotton mines are closed and the workers take to their holidays and revolves around a holiday affair between mill hand, Fanny and the boss's son, Alan.

Despite being set during the early 1900's the contemporary edge on the characters attitudes and behaviour really stand up today, centuries later.

On a fashion/costume/design point of view, Olivia de Monceau created a beautiful set and wonderful period costumes, and as always, i'm a very proud brother.

Preparation COMPLETE.

The BIAD Fashion Retail Management Exhibition is ready to start.

After 3 years of intensive learning, the work is almost finished and though there are a few loose ends to tie up, the end is in sight.

This year, we have the privelege of showcasing our work in pretty impressive exhibition booths, which allow each student to have their own space and freedom to do with what they wish. I spent alot of time conceptualising my space, knowing I had full control over how I would showcase my work.

I wanted to reflect my concept within my exhibition space without detracting from my work. My concept is all about clean lines, geometrics and a masculine aesthetic and therefore this has been transported into the exhibition space. I wanted to keep the space clean and certainly in this case... less is DEFINATLEY more.

Really pleased with the outcome of my space. It reflects my concept like I set out to accomplish without detracting from, but complimenting my work.

Also... a BIG thankyou to Joe Miles who printed my large exhibition poster! Really great quality!

BCU Media Exhibition

Like the good friend that I am, I went to the BCU Media Exhibition this evening to support a few friends who were showcasing their work.

'Exhibit This' featured a broad selection of student specialisms ranging through photography, journalism, radio and television. These selection of students had the pleasure of showcasing their final works in the Zellig building located in the heart of the Custard Factory. A fantastic location, for a fantastic selection of work.

One particular students work which really encapsulated a great concept and breadth of work was by 'Holly Roberts' who produced a fantastic film entitled 'Abberance' which showcased various different short stories intertwined by one key theme. Beautifully shot.

Phillipa Duke's directorial debut didn't go unnoticed with a fantastic documentary highlighting peoples views on tattooing. Whether you love them or hate them, the bottom line is... it's artwork adorned on the body. Really lovely shot. Interesting and thought provoking.

Birmingham really is filled with amazing design, media and art based talent and it really does put it into perspective when you attend student events like this one.

A real treat! If you attended you will know what i'm talking about!

I was unfortunatley left a little bored after I saw the menswear winner at Graduate Fashion Week.

I completley appreciate the workmanship, and in no way am I denying his win, but what would this blog be if I didn't voice my opinion?

The excecution of the collection is immaculate however, I personally feel it didn't seem fresh and though his use of historic patterns were commendable, I was only left feeling like it had been done before.

The black panel detailing and vent on the jacket are great but it seems to be overlooked. I do however love the black knee-length trench.

The seventh annual Graduate Fashion Week Gold Winner has been won.

Rory Longdon, a graduate from Nottingham Trent University won the prestigious award as well as scooping a £20,000 prize.

The gold award winner is 'chosen for demonstrating exceptional facility in design, cut and construction, and excellent use of fabric and colour' - Graduate Fashion Week, 2011.

I was blown away by the sheer workmanship of his collection. Instantly wearable, and though a simple idea, the collection translated into a very cohesive and immaculately constructed set of garments. I adore the fabric choices and the zip detailing is an interesting touch.

Sheffield Showcase Project

Just gained some summer work experience!

I will be working in partnership with the Sheffield Showcase Project as a Visual Merchandiser. The aim of the project is to showcase South Yorkshire design talent in an outdoor exhibition within the city centre, which in turn will generate more foot fall for the high-street.

I feel really passionate about celebrating young design talent, as so much is wasted due to lack of funding or just not having access to the correct facilites.

The week long project is funded entirely by Sheffield City Council and is in partnership with Creative Sheffield and The Source. The dynamic initiative will offer a platform for local businesses and creative individuals to contribute to the improvement of the city by showcasing their wares within the exhibition.

I think it will be a fantastic opportunity to gain some more experience working within a field I feel very passionate about.

Things are on the up!

To say i'm dissapointed is definatley an understatement.

Today is supposed to be my scheduled day at Graduate Fashion Week. The event where fashion students up and down the country showcase their hard work. After weeks of looking forward to going, mother nature decides to strike and give me bronchitis. Well... the early stages of bronchitis anyway. Apparantly I have inflamamation of the bronchi. (who knows?!)

That said, i'm tooked up in bed and writing this blog post with very little energy. Though i've not managed to get there, I know my friends have made sure my work has been shown, even for a little while.

That's what friends are for eh?

Thankfully, it wasn't an assessed trip, and though i've missed out on the experience of showcasing my degree work, I can atleast say I have been before and seen it for myself. It's just a shame that I wasn't lucky this time.

Hopefully i'll feel better soon. For the time being, i'm happy to be in bed. hmph.

At 96, Carmen Herrera the Cuban painter, is... dare i say it?... old in the tooth, yet her work still oozes a youth and contemporary edge which has enabled her to fit perfectly within the art elite.

Her work is a milestone in geometric, minimalist artwork and she still remains one of the leaders of the densely packed abstract expressionalists of the modern day.

I've always been intrigued by her images hence why i'm showcasing this post on her. I really think it reflects my aesthetic and the way I design as an individual and how her work has inspired many of my own.

It seems i'm not the only one who is inspired by Carmen. Spanish designer, Narciso Rodriguez recentley showcased his resort 2012 collection, where abstract geometric prints became the core of the collection.

'MFAS Half A1 Posters - BIAD Exhibtion - Lee Greaves'

Just completed my final half A1 posters for the BIAD show. YAY

The above image is the full document and will be halved however, the printers needed it to be created in full A1 size. Who knew using printers could be so complex?

The above posters have been designed specifically to compliment the overall look of my stand without detracting or cluttering the space. I intially started playing around with images however, I thought it felt like I was just duplicating my original main poster.

With that in mind, I designed posters to flank my stand using text (MFAS Tag Line) and a geometric, monochrome pattern which has been used throughout the branding of the magazine. With using carefully considered fonts, the posters compliment the look of the stand by keeping it clean and sophisticated and without duplicating images from other pieces.

I'm getting really nervous for the END. It seems to have come around so quickly that i'm clinging on to the last moments as a student.

Onwards and upwards! I've still got the final shows to look forward too! I'll update you later!

Missoni - Resort 2012

Missoni showcased their latest resort collection on friday, and it was a right 20's affair. Embracing a soft silhouette reminiscent of the 1920's, with the collection featuring beautiful print dresses, walking shorts and violet. Yes, lots of violet. And if that wasn't enough to get you excited, the turban made a comeback.

Though not Missoni's best work, the beautiful prints and soft colour palette are commendable.

Gareth Pugh For MAC

MAC have today revealed they have forged a new partnership with Gareth Pugh. The two are collaborating on a collection which will launch globally in november, with specially designed, limited edition packaging, colour ways and accessories.

Gareth's makeup looks featured within his collections have always been very impressive, so if his Spring 2010 'Godesses From The Grave' is anything to go by, this looks to be a money spinner.

Summer has arrived and so has the Resort collections. YSL was out in full force revealing their latest collection to the world.

The collection screamed commercial sophistication, as every piece could easily be translated into high-street pieces, and be sported by women across the globe. The high wooden wedges, short dresses and beautiful summer prints were an instant hit to my eye, whilst the anchor print seemed to weigh the collection down considerably. The poppy prints are subtle, yet striking and the breezy maxi's will easily find buyers.

Despite the anchor, YSL provides us with a really beautiful, weightless, summer triumph.

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

After a few days of rain, the arrival of the sun was welcomed with open arms. Embracing the weather, me and a few friends decided to have lunch around the canal, and then take a trip too the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Though not specifically catered to fashion, the museum still provided ample entertainment and inspiration.

Some really interesting pieces including 'Linear Construction', a Naum Gabo piece from 1957. A Fantastic perspex structure. Geometric, Clean, Controlled. My aesthetic encapsulated into one piece.

A Bank Holiday Excursion...

Took a drive into Hebden Bridge today after my weekend at home. For any of you that dont know it's a town in west yorkshire. Beautiful scenery, Gorgeous independant boutques and shops. Perfect for an afternoon out.

Sometimes it's nice to get away from all the hussle and bustle of the city life, and when I come home from Birmingham, I often get that privelige. Not only that, but living within a city means alot of the stores are what are forced down your throat. No difference.

Don't get me wrong, the high-street is fantastic, but getting a taste of something individual and bespoke really inspires me.

One of the most beautiful, 'The Yorkshire Soap Co' provides the most luscious and mouth watering bath products on the market. Forget 'Lush' and 'The Body Shop', this is a wonder emporium which showcases the most phenomenal products. A must see. And if my words don't tempt the senses, the company has just opened within 'Harrods'.

Raining yet again. A perfect day to complete my poster for the BIAD show. Obviously from the monstrous dissertation project, i've become pretty adept in using InDesign, despite wanting to uninstall it at various different stages.

The poster is used to encapsulate the whole concept and therefore, I need it to clearly showcase my aesthetic as well as the feel and look of the concept entirely. Getting to grips with the program was challenging initially however, I did spend alot of time in design lectures and playing around on it prior to actually starting anything. I think the key here is... dont give up. It does definatley get easier once you understand each function.

Dont fret. This isn't the finished document, this is literally just my work imported onto a template. I wanted to provide you with a snapshot of my development, and the direction which i'm taking. I will update you later with a finished piece.

Barnes & Noble sparked an interesting debate today when they elected to censor an image of male model, Andrej Pejic, on the cover of Dossier magazine.

'... in case customers confuse him for a woman.'

The male model, who is cast for his androgynous and feminine looks believes the photo shouldn't be censored. I agree. If it's suitable for a male to bare his chest in a magazine such as 'Mens Health' then why would this warrant such censorship?

Andrej stated 'I think the question really isn't the gender of the person on the cover, it's whether it's porn or it's art,' he explained. 'And clearly, it's art, so art really should not be censored in a democratic society.'

I agree. I can appreciate that some customers may be confused over his appearance however, I think it's important that we are not just fuelled with images of the standard men we see on most covers.

Society needs to accept difference.

The FINAL Presentation

Today is the day people! The final presentation!

It's taken 3 years to fully develop my presentation style, but I finally feel comfortable with the way I present.

'Promotion & The Future' is the final brief, in which which have to create a short powerpoint presentation which documents upon our 3 years on the course, what skills we arrived with and how we have developed these skills and finally what we are looking to do in the future.

It went really well and considering in first year, I could barely hold a piece of paper without it shaking uncontrollably, I seem to have come a long way. As far as i'm concerned the key change in myself, is a confidence in my own ability and I feel this is something which I will be forever grateful for. Forget my work, actually being able to stand infront of a number of people and deliver a presentation confidently, is something i'm proud to say I finally possess. And this wouldnt have been possible without coming to uni.

The ultimate phenomenon of the 90's. The Spice Girls dominated the globe with their 'Girl Power' motto, taking over the charts with a selection of number one hits, sell out shows and some of the most distinct pop costumery that the industry had seen. Thanks to my closeness to Leeds, I decided to take a trip to the 'Leeds City Museum, where the ultimate 90's exhibition unfolded.

Liz West's obsession with the group resulted in a collection of over 3600 pieces, which were showcased at the exhibition. Free of charge.

From multiple copies of their music to the prolific union jack boots, the exhibition documented the bands formation in 1996 to their sorry demise, which resulted in numerous, semi-successful solo careers.

Utopia Job Interview...

The unfortunate side effects of job interviews. Nervousness, sweaty palms, the usual. Thankfully they didn't surface in todays mock interview for 'Utopia'.

Sat in a interview room, reminiscent of Alan Sugar's 'Apprentice', opposite two fearsome interviewers. (Not so. It was my lecturers Alison and Julia.) Nevertheless, interview conditions still applied and it was as professional as any other.

Despite having to sell myself for a role which didn't necessarilly interest me, was challenging. I think it may have been more appropriate and successful for all, if there were maybe several options for a job role, which each student could choose from and then the interview questions would be more relevant to what they would encounter after university.

Obviously in the 'real world' I would be applying for a role where my work experience would be relevant, rather than trying to sell my experience for a role which isn't a) what i'm wanting to do and b) where my experience fits the role.

Hmm... who know's. That's just my opinion.

Yes. my business cards have arrived, and I suddenly feel alot more powerful. hah.

Joking aside, I'm really pleased with the outcome after I designed them online and then had them made up. Really professional result, and their presented in a pretty cool display box, with a 'mine' and 'theirs' tabs.

I'm like a child a christmas.

I wanted to go for a geometric lined design which really showcases my aesthetic and in terms of colour way keep it really professional with monochromes.

P.s... I don't want any of you rascals stealing my phone number and therefore i've edited it out.

Aside from a tutorial with Alison, ASDA shop and watching the not so classic children's film 'Space Jam' (you didn't need to know that part. I never fail to embarass myself.), today has mostly been about editing my CV and making sure it really translates what i'm about and the skills I have. Especially in this field of work, showing off your personal strengths is a huge benefit. CV's are no different.

Employers get countless CV's in the standard format and when someone sends in a fresh spin on what they are used to, employers stand to attention.

I plan to WOW them with my creative prowess. I joke.

After my tutorial I did a little research in the library, to have a scan through some business related publications and design books to see if I can get any inspiration for different formats of CVs.

I really want to produce a stand out CV. This is my goal. Watch this space.

Oscar nominated starlett Hailee Steinfeld has today been confirmed as the new, campaign face of Miu Miu. The 14 year old, American actress rose to fame for her portrayal of Mattie Ross in the spectacular 2010 film, True Grit.

Sparks and rumours were initially sent soaring when the youngster was spotted at the labels Autumn/Winter 2011 show in Paris, where she attended alongside Mila Kunis.

Another day, another guest lecture.

Jane McAllister, a careers development specialist from Birmingham City University, delivered a lecture on the issues we may face when we leave university, skills employers are looking for and advice for securing the best possible outcome in interviews.

The information we learned was of great help, especially those regarding skills and advice we need for preparing for a good interview. We were shown a brief film which documented two students who were applying for the same graphic design job. Though it's slightly dated, 90's humour was a little irrelevant in terms of the jobs we were looking for, the information we gained was insightful.

The thought of leaving university is a BIG deal for most (especially me, who feels slightly sick at the thought of leaving.) and therefore, understanding what practices we need to undertake to make ourselves as employable as possible is essential. Thanks to Jane, i now know this.

On The Long(ish) Haul To Graduate Fashion Week

As the 4th of June creeps ever closer, fashion students up and down the country are scrambling together their last pieces of work to showcase at GFW. yes, us at BIAD are showcasing our 3 years hard labour at the event, for the entire duration.

I have completley organised my schedule to make sure i'm on the ball. (I have even made a calendar just to make sure i'm even more organised. Though you didn't need to know that!)

I'm ever so slightly weary of straying into the big, bad, world after my departure from university, but as my mother says, you have to do it sometime.

Ordered my business cards aswell ready for the event, just incase some high flyer wants to snap me up. That would be welcomed with open arms!

We can only hope ;)

And it's that said beauty, which is to be celebrated in a collection of photographs of the model on thursday. La Gallerie de L'instant in Paris will feature the work in an exhibition which almost didn't happen. It was scheduled to take place over three years ago, but due to insufficient finds it was cancelled. Whomp Whomp.

Despite the initial cancellation, and long process of securing a gallery. The smaller venue will feature the exhibition of Moss, which will document the whole 20 years of her varied and prolific career. Hurrah!

A representitive of the gallery stated... '.. She has inspired the biggest photographers of every generation as well as contemporary artists including Lucian Freud, Marc Quinn and Sam Taylor Wood.... It is therefore only fair, that we dedicate an exhibition to her, as her work with photographers has been so rich and varied.'

Chanel 2012 Cruise Collection

As the red carpet is rolled for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, Karl Lagerfeld debuted his Chanel 2012 Cruise Collection, which turned out to be a rather beautiful affair. Attended by the likes of Blake Lively and Vanessa Paradis, the collection was showcased in an open-air catwalk in Antibes,France.

Reminiscent of 20's and 30's vintage glamour, the collection featured heavy whites, floral prints, shift dresses and the ever 'trendy' Palazzo pants. Very crisp, clean lines were constant throughout the collection evoking a very fresh summer mood. As always with Chanel, luxury is key.

And... Giabiconi was along for the ride too!

Ahh! What a lovely week. I took a trip to Rennes, France last week, to see a friend who was doing a year abroad as part of their university schedule. Great times. Lovely sights.

For any of you that don't know.. Rennes is the capital city of Brittany, in Northwest France. The city is heavily interested in the arts and culture, and stumbling across things which are beautiful was guaranteed.

I did manage to go to the museum of Fine Arts, which had a broad range of collections from Ancient Egyptian antiquities too contemporary art pieces. Really nice range of pieces particularly the primitive and renaissance works.

Go! Go! Go!

The world held their breath waiting for the first moment they would lay their eyes upon the future queen and watch the fairytale unfold.

Speculation had mounted regarding the designer who had been chosen to create the wedding ensemble and with great happiness and relief, Mrs Sarah Burton, AKA creative director for the late Mcqueen brand, was bestowed with the overwhelming gift of creating a fairytale masterpiece.

Simple yet striking. The dress represented british craftmenship perfectly.

The country was unified. Amen.

New Direction...

First and foremost I would like to apologise for the dry spell in my blog posting of late. Dissertation panic and heavy work loads have unfortunatley taken it's toll on my world of blogging, and it had to take a back seat. However.. with great pleasure and excitement i'm back with a vengeance!

You may be happy to know i've handed in my dissertation after several months of alot of hard work. Real sense of accomplishment this time around. Possibly because I was so passionate about what I was working on and also due to the amount of time and effort I had to put into it. (If the absurd tuition fee increase hasnt already put you off... the sheer amount of work possibly will... I joke. It's great!)

Enough of the self pity. Same content. Same style. New start.
